Brahmamurari Surarchita Lingam — Adoration of the Shiva Linga
Lingashtakam (लिंगाष्टकम्) is a revered eight-verse Sanskrit hymn that glorifies the Shiva Linga — the universal, formless symbol of Lord Shiva. The stotra describes the infinite glory of the Linga, which is worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu, celestial beings, and sages. It explains how the Linga destroys all sorrows, poverty, and accumulated sins.
ब्रह्ममुरारि सुरार्चित लिंगं, निर्मलभासित शोभित लिंगम्। जन्मजदुःख विनाशक लिंगं, तत्प्रणमामि सदाशिव लिंगम्॥
देवमुनि प्रवरार्चित लिंगं, कामदहं करुणाकर लिंगम्। रावणदर्प विनाशन लिंगं, तत्प्रणमामि सदाशिव लिंगम्॥
सर्वसुगन्धि सुलेपित लिंगं, बुद्धिविवर्धन कारण लिंगम्। सिद्धसुरासुर वन्दित लिंगं, तत्प्रणमामि सदाशिव लिंगम्॥
कनकमहामणि भूषित लिंगं, फणिपतिवेष्टित शोभित लिंगम्। दक्षसुयज्ञ विनाशन लिंगं, तत्प्रणमामि सदाशिव लिंगम्॥
कुङ्कुमचन्दन लेपित लिंगं, पङ्कजहार सुशोभित लिंगम्। सञ्चितपाप विनाशन लिंगं, तत्प्रणमामि सदाशिव लिंगम्॥
देवगणार्चित सेवित लिंगं, भावैर्भक्तिभिरेव च लिंगम्। दिनकरकोटि प्रभाकर लिंगं, तत्प्रणमामि सदाशिव लिंगम्॥
अष्टदलोपरिवेष्टित लिंगं, सर्वसमुद्भव कारण लिंगम्। अष्टदरिद्र विनाशन लिंगं, तत्प्रणमामि सदाशिव लिंगम्॥
सुरगुरुसुरवर पूजित लिंगं, सुरवनपुष्प सदार्चित लिंगम्। परात्परं परमात्मक लिंगं, तत्प्रणमामि सदाशिव लिंगम्॥
The Shiva Linga is an eternal, beginningless, and endless cylinder representing the infinite cosmic nature of Lord Shiva. It symbolizes the union of Shiva (consciousness) and Shakti (energy) which brings forth creation.
The phala shruti (benefit verse) states that whoever chants these eight verses in the presence of Lord Shiva attains the supreme abode of Shivaloka and enjoys eternal bliss with Shiva.
