ॐ नमः शिवाय
The Panchakshara Mantra — Meaning & Significance
Om Namah Shivaya (ॐ नमः शिवाय) is one of the most sacred and widely chanted mantras in Hinduism. Known as the Panchakshara (five-syllable) Mantra — Na-Ma-Shi-Va-Ya — it is the fundamental mantra of Lord Shiva. This mantra appears in the Yajurveda's Sri Rudram, making it over 5,000 years old. It is the maha mantra of Shaivism.
'Om Namah Shivaya' means 'I bow to Lord Shiva' or 'Salutations to the auspicious one.' The five syllables Na-Ma-Shi-Va-Ya represent the five elements of nature — earth, water, fire, air, and space.
Om Namah Shivaya is chanted 108 times using a mala (rosary). It can also be chanted 11, 21, or 1008 times for special purposes. Monday is the most auspicious day for this mantra.
Regular chanting purifies the mind, removes negative thoughts and karma, brings peace and clarity, destroys illness, and ultimately leads to moksha (liberation). It is said to be effective for healing and protection.
